La Bourse pour les Nuls : Comprendre le Marché Marocain

MASI و3 قيم رائدة: ATW وIAM وBCP

MASI and 3 flagship stocks: ATW, IAM, BCP

The stock market is not a casino

The Casablanca Stock Exchange is a regulated market where you buy shares in real Moroccan companies — not bets. When you buy an IAM share, you become a co-owner of Maroc Telecom. You may receive dividends and participate in growth — with the risk of a price decline.

Myth BVC reality
“It’s a casino” Investment in companies that employ people, produce goods and pay dividends
“You have to be rich” 1 IAM share ≈ 91 MAD — you can start modestly
“It’s too risky” Risk is managed through diversification and a long time horizon

The players that protect you

  • AMMC — Moroccan Capital Market Authority: regulator, prospectus approval.
  • Casablanca Stock Exchange — trading platform (session 9:30–15:30).
  • Maroclear — central depository: proof that you own your shares.
  • SGB — brokerage firm: your intermediary for placing orders.

The MASI — barometer of the market

The MASI (Moroccan All Shares Index) aggregates roughly 75 listed stocks. It measures the overall performance of the Moroccan market. When the MASI rises, most shares advance; when it falls, the opposite. The MSI 20 groups the 20 largest market caps — more concentrated on ATW, IAM and the banks.

ATW + IAM together represent a significant share of the MASI (~25–30%). Understanding these two names means you already understand a large fraction of the market.

Reading your first stock page — 5 lines

Open the IAM page on Casabourse and note:

  1. Price — last traded price (not a promise of future value)
  2. Market cap — total value the market assigns to the company
  3. P/E — how many years of earnings the market is paying for
  4. Dividend yield — DPS / price (IAM ~4.4%)
  5. Volume — how many shares trade (liquidity)

Repeat on ATW and BCP. Compare: ATW trades at a higher P/E than BCP — why? (quality, size, liquidity).

Life cycle of a share

A company may enter the market via an IPO, then trade daily. Shareholders receive dividends if the company distributes them (IAM, ATW, BCP do so regularly). The price fluctuates with results, rates and sentiment — normal over the medium term.

Why start with ATW, IAM, BCP?

  • Liquidity — easy to buy and sell (especially IAM and ATW).
  • Transparency — annual financial reports (RFA), press releases, analyst coverage.
  • MASI representativeness — banks + telecom = core of the index.
  • Learning value — business models a beginner can grasp.

Volume and liquidity — why it matters from your first read

Volume shows how many shares trade per day. On IAM, ~44,070 shares/day — your order for 10 or 100 shares executes easily. On a small cap, even 500 shares can “move” the price. Before buying, check the order book: the spread (bid/ask gap) is the hidden cost of the trade.

Practical exercise on the BVC

15-minute exercise: open the ATW, IAM and BCP pages. Fill in a table with price, market cap, P/E, yield, volume. Then open the Casabourse comparator and align the three names. Rank them from most defensive (IAM) to most cyclical (ATW/BCP tied to credit). Check MASI performance on Casabourse: when the MASI falls, what do ATW and IAM do? Write down one observation — you have just done your first market analysis.

Key takeaways

  • MASI = barometer of ~75 stocks; MSI 20 = top 20 market caps.
  • ATW + IAM + BCP = gateway to the Moroccan market.
  • 5 stock-page lines: price, market cap, P/E, yield, volume.
  • AMMC + Maroclear + SGB = secure framework.

Self-check

  1. What does the MASI measure?
  2. Which 3 flagship stocks cover banks and telecom?
  3. What does the price shown on a stock page represent?
  4. Why is IAM considered defensive?
  5. How do you use the comparator for the 3 stocks?
